One of the most famous theatrical jesters, Jack Point is a central character in Gilbert & Sullivan's Yeoman of the Guard, first performed in 1888. Jack, the traditionally tragic part played by a comic character, loses his sweetheart by a mixture of folly and misfortune, and laments her loss with the familiar refrain: 'Misery me, lack a day dee! This female Pied Piper, leading the men astray, probably came from a contemporary revue of the traditional story. An early version of this figure has been recorded wearing a blue hat with a feather.
